Psilocybin is an organic chemical compound found in certain species of mushrooms commonly referred to as “hallucinogenic mushrooms.” In recent years, psilocybin has increasingly appeared in discussions about mental health and possible therapeutic applications. At the same time, it remains a psychoactive substance with a strong effect on the central nervous system.
Legal Status and Medical Context
Psilocybin is not approved in Poland as a medication and is not considered a standard method of addiction treatment. In some countries, clinical research is being conducted into its potential use in the treatment of selected mental health disorders, but these are strictly controlled procedures carried out in research settings and under the supervision of medical teams.
At Zeus Detox & Rehab, we do not provide therapy using psilocybin or any other psychedelic substances. Addiction treatment is based on medical qualification, stabilisation, and therapy with a confirmed safety profile. Our treatment model is described on the page drug addiction treatment.
How Psilocybin Works
Psilocybin affects serotonin receptors in the brain, leading to altered states of consciousness, disturbances in perception, intensified emotions, and changes in thought patterns. The effects depend strongly on dose, setting, and the mental condition of the person taking the substance.
The most frequently described effects include changes in visual perception, a sense of derealisation, emotional fluctuations, and intense subjective experiences. In some individuals, the experience may be marked by fear, disorganisation, or loss of psychological stability.
Psilocybin and Addiction Treatment
Media discussions sometimes suggest that psilocybin may support psychotherapeutic processes. It should be emphasised, however, that current clinical knowledge does not recognise a single psychedelic experience as a sufficient method of treating addiction.
Addiction is a chronic disorder involving neurobiological, psychological, and environmental mechanisms. Treatment requires structure, stabilisation, and therapeutic work. Depending on the substance involved, the first stage may be safe stabilisation, for example drug detox.
Risks and Contraindications
Psilocybin may pose particular risks for people with a history of psychosis, anxiety disorders, severe depression, PTSD, or suicidal thoughts. Altered states of consciousness may intensify symptoms and destabilise mental functioning.
An additional risk factor is the use of antidepressants, antipsychotics, sedatives, or the mixing of psychoactive substances. Pharmacological interactions may lead to unpredictable reactions.
The Problem of “Self-Treatment”
The high level of interest in psilocybin often reflects a search for rapid change or a shortcut in the recovery process. From a clinical perspective, self-experimentation with psychoactive substances, especially in the presence of addiction, increases the risk of complications and may deepen the problem rather than resolve it.
Addiction treatment requires individual medical assessment, a therapeutic plan, and monitoring of progress. The therapeutic stage of care is described on the page drug addiction therapy.
When Medical Help Is Necessary
Urgent medical help is necessary in the event of seizures, loss of consciousness, severe disturbances of consciousness, symptoms of psychosis, intense agitation, breathing problems, or chest pain after the use of any psychoactive substance. These symptoms require immediate intervention.
In the context of addiction, another warning sign is loss of control over the dose, repeated withdrawal episodes, and mixing of different substances. In such situations, clinical qualification is necessary.
