What is alprazolam

Alprazolam is a benzodiazepine medication used in the treatment of anxiety disorders, panic attacks and short-term states of psychological tension. It acts by enhancing the activity of the GABA neurotransmitter in the central nervous system, producing anxiolytic, sedative and hypnotic effects.

The substance is known under brand names including Xanax, and is characterised by a rapid onset of action — a feature that significantly increases its dependency potential.

When urgent medical attention is required

Urgent medical attention is required if any of the following occur during withdrawal: seizures, loss of consciousness, severe disorientation, symptoms of psychosis, aggressive behaviour disproportionate to the situation, severe chest pain, shortness of breath or suspected overdose. In these situations, no attempt should be made to manage the condition independently. Patient safety and rapid clinical assessment are always the priority. In any life-threatening or health-threatening situation, emergency services should be contacted immediately by calling 112.

Alprazolam and the risk of dependency

Alprazolam belongs to the benzodiazepines with high potential for psychological and physical dependency, particularly with long-term use, exceeding recommended doses, situational use in response to stress, or combination with alcohol or other psychoactive substances. Dependency may develop even when the medication is used in accordance with medical recommendations, especially in individuals with anxiety disorders or susceptibility to compulsive mechanisms.

How alprazolam addiction develops

The addiction process typically follows a staged course: initial use to reduce anxiety or tension, rapid experience of relief and calm, development of tolerance and the need to increase doses, emergence of withdrawal symptoms between doses, loss of control over medication use, and fear of functioning without alprazolam. In many patients, the medication ceases to serve a therapeutic function and becomes the primary mechanism for emotional regulation.

Symptoms of alprazolam addiction

Psychological and behavioural symptoms

  • intensified anxiety between doses
  • irritability and mood swings
  • difficulties with concentration and memory
  • a sense of being unable to function without the medication
  • denial of the problem
  • compulsive thoughts about the next dose

Physical symptoms

  • drowsiness or paradoxical agitation
  • headaches
  • hand tremors
  • coordination difficulties
  • withdrawal syndrome symptoms

Alprazolam withdrawal syndrome

Abrupt cessation of alprazolam can lead to a severe withdrawal syndrome, which may include intensified anxiety and panic, insomnia, tremors and sweating, perceptual disturbances, states of derealisation and depersonalisation, seizures, and psychotic symptoms. For this reason, self-managed alprazolam withdrawal is dangerous and strongly inadvisable.

Alprazolam addiction treatment at Zeus Detox & Rehab

Treatment of benzodiazepine dependency is provided exclusively in an inpatient setting, under full medical and psychiatric supervision. The therapeutic process begins with a thorough clinical assessment encompassing the patient's history of benzodiazepine use, psychological state and risk of withdrawal complications.

Care is delivered in a discreet clinical environment, with full respect for the patient's privacy and dignity. The treatment plan is individualised and adjusted in accordance with the course of therapy and clinical response.

Stages of alprazolam addiction treatment

Alprazolam addiction treatment at Zeus Detox & Rehab typically proceeds through four main clinical stages:

Stage 1: Clinical assessment and qualification

Detailed medical and psychiatric history, analysis of doses and duration of use, assessment of seizure and delirium risk, laboratory tests, diagnosis of co-occurring psychiatric disorders.

Stage 2: Medically supervised benzodiazepine detoxification

Gradual and controlled dose reduction of alprazolam, pharmacological management of withdrawal symptoms, 24/7 neurological monitoring and vital signs assessment, prevention of seizures and psychiatric complications, round-the-clock nursing care. This is the most critical stage of treatment.

Stage 3: Psychiatric treatment and psychotherapy

Following stabilisation: treatment of anxiety and depressive disorders, individual psychotherapy, addressing psychological dependency, learning alternative emotional regulation strategies, relapse prevention therapy.

Stage 4: Aftercare planning

Individual post-discharge treatment plan, continuation of outpatient or inpatient therapy, psychiatric support, long-term safety strategy.

Treatment of benzodiazepine dependency involves significant medical risk and requires individual medical qualification. In cases of severe complications or lack of response to pharmacological treatment, the patient may be referred to hospital treatment at a higher level of care.
