What is diazepam
Diazepam is a long-acting benzodiazepine medication used in the treatment of anxiety disorders, insomnia, muscle tension, seizures and alcohol withdrawal states. It acts by enhancing the activity of the GABA neurotransmitter in the central nervous system, producing sedative, muscle-relaxant and anxiolytic effects.
Known under brand names including Valium, diazepam was for many years widely prescribed as a "calming" medication — a factor that contributed to its widespread and often long-term use.
When urgent medical attention is required
Urgent medical attention is required if any of the following occur during withdrawal: seizures, loss of consciousness, severe disorientation, symptoms of psychosis, aggressive behaviour disproportionate to the situation, severe chest pain, shortness of breath or suspected overdose. In these situations, no attempt should be made to manage the condition independently. Patient safety and rapid clinical assessment are always the priority. In any life-threatening or health-threatening situation, emergency services should be contacted immediately by calling 112.
Diazepam and the risk of dependency
Despite its reputation as a "milder" benzodiazepine, diazepam carries a high dependency potential — particularly with chronic use, regular intake over many months or years, use without consistent medical supervision, or combination with alcohol or other sedatives. Its long half-life means that withdrawal symptoms may be delayed, which often leads to the mistaken belief that the medication is not addictive.
How diazepam addiction develops
The addiction process typically develops gradually: use of the medication to reduce anxiety or improve sleep, entrenchment of a regular dosing pattern, development of tolerance and weakening of its effects, dose increases or more frequent use, emergence of withdrawal symptoms, and psychological dependence on the medication as the primary emotional regulator. In many patients, dependency develops imperceptibly and is often mistaken for "ongoing treatment".
Symptoms of diazepam addiction
Psychological and behavioural symptoms
- increasing anxiety between doses
- emotional blunting
- difficulties with concentration and memory
- reduced motivation
- difficulties functioning without the medication
- denial of the problem
Physical symptoms
- drowsiness and psychomotor slowing
- reduced muscle tone
- dizziness
- coordination difficulties
- withdrawal syndrome symptoms
Diazepam withdrawal syndrome
Abrupt or uncontrolled cessation of diazepam can lead to intensified anxiety and insomnia, tremors and sweating, perceptual disturbances, derealisation and depersonalisation, seizures, and psychotic states. Due to the medication's long duration of action, symptoms may appear several days after dose reduction or cessation — which increases the risk of complications without medical supervision.
Diazepam addiction treatment at Zeus Detox & Rehab
Treatment of benzodiazepine dependency is provided exclusively in an inpatient setting, under full medical and psychiatric supervision. The therapeutic process begins with a thorough clinical assessment encompassing the patient's history of benzodiazepine use, current health status and risk of withdrawal complications.
Care is delivered in a discreet clinical environment, with full respect for the patient's privacy and dignity. The treatment plan is individualised and adjusted in accordance with the course of therapy and clinical response.
Stages of diazepam addiction treatment
Diazepam addiction treatment at Zeus Detox & Rehab typically proceeds through four main clinical stages:
Stage 1: Clinical assessment and qualification
Detailed medical and psychiatric history, analysis of doses and duration of use, assessment of seizure and delirium risk, laboratory tests, diagnosis of co-occurring psychiatric disorders.
Stage 2: Medically supervised benzodiazepine detoxification
Gradual and controlled dose reduction of diazepam, pharmacological management of withdrawal symptoms, 24/7 neurological monitoring and vital signs assessment, prevention of seizures and psychiatric complications, round-the-clock nursing care. This is the most critical stage of treatment.
Stage 3: Psychiatric treatment and psychotherapy
Following stabilisation: treatment of anxiety and depressive disorders, individual psychotherapy, addressing psychological dependency, learning safe emotional regulation methods, relapse prevention therapy.
Stage 4: Aftercare planning
Individual post-discharge treatment plan, continuation of outpatient or inpatient therapy, psychiatric support, long-term safety strategy.
Treatment of benzodiazepine dependency involves significant medical risk and requires individual medical qualification. In cases of severe complications or lack of response to pharmacological treatment, the patient may be referred to hospital treatment at a higher level of care.
