What is lorazepam

Lorazepam is a short- to medium-acting benzodiazepine medication used primarily in the treatment of anxiety disorders, acute states of tension and agitation, anxiety-related insomnia, preoperative sedation and acute agitation. It acts by enhancing the activity of the GABA neurotransmitter in the central nervous system, producing rapid anxiolytic and sedative effects.

Compared to long-acting benzodiazepines, lorazepam acts more rapidly and intensely — a property that significantly increases the risk of developing psychological dependency in a short period of time.

When urgent medical attention is required

Urgent medical attention is required if any of the following occur during withdrawal: seizures, loss of consciousness, severe disorientation, symptoms of psychosis, aggressive behaviour disproportionate to the situation, severe chest pain, shortness of breath or suspected overdose. In these situations, no attempt should be made to manage the condition independently. Patient safety and rapid clinical assessment are always the priority. In any life-threatening or health-threatening situation, emergency services should be contacted immediately by calling 112.

Lorazepam and the risk of dependency

Lorazepam carries a high dependency potential, particularly with regular use beyond a few weeks, frequent situational use, symptomatic treatment without addressing the underlying cause, use in response to stress or insomnia, or combination with alcohol or other sedatives. Dependency frequently develops imperceptibly, as the medication initially provides effective relief from anxiety and tension.

How lorazepam addiction develops

The typical course of dependency includes: commencement of treatment for anxiety symptoms, rapid reinforcement of the pattern "tablet = relief", shortening of intervals between doses, development of tolerance, onset of rebound anxiety, and psychological and physical dependence. In many cases the patient interprets withdrawal symptoms as a "relapse of the illness" rather than an effect of the medication — which further delays recognition of the problem.

Symptoms of lorazepam addiction

Psychological and behavioural symptoms

  • intensified anxiety between doses
  • restlessness and irritability
  • difficulties with concentration
  • excessive preoccupation with access to the medication
  • reduced tolerance to stress
  • avoidance of situations without the medication as a "safety net"

Physical symptoms

  • drowsiness and psychomotor slowing
  • dizziness
  • coordination difficulties
  • muscle tension
  • withdrawal syndrome symptoms

Lorazepam withdrawal syndrome

Abrupt or uncontrolled cessation of lorazepam can lead to intense anxiety and panic, insomnia, tremors and sweating, derealisation, sensory hypersensitivity, seizures and psychotic states. Due to its short duration of action, withdrawal symptoms may emerge rapidly and with considerable intensity — which makes self-managed lorazepam withdrawal particularly dangerous.

Lorazepam addiction treatment at Zeus Detox & Rehab

Treatment of benzodiazepine dependency is provided exclusively in an inpatient setting, under full medical and psychiatric supervision. The therapeutic process begins with a thorough clinical assessment encompassing the patient's history of medication use, duration and doses, and assessment of the risk of withdrawal complications.

Care is delivered in a discreet clinical environment, with full respect for the patient's privacy and dignity. The treatment plan is individualised and adjusted in accordance with the clinical response and co-occurring disorders.

Stages of lorazepam addiction treatment

Lorazepam addiction treatment at Zeus Detox & Rehab typically proceeds through four main clinical stages:

Stage 1: Clinical assessment and qualification

Detailed psychiatric history, analysis of dosing pattern, assessment of anxiety severity, laboratory tests, diagnosis of co-occurring disorders.

Stage 2: Medically supervised benzodiazepine detoxification

Gradual dose reduction under medical supervision, psychological stabilisation, 24/7 monitoring of vital signs, prevention of seizures and emotional destabilisation, round-the-clock nursing care. This is the most critical stage of treatment.

Stage 3: Psychiatric treatment and psychotherapy

Following stabilisation: treatment of anxiety disorders, individual psychotherapy, addressing mechanisms of psychological dependency, learning emotional regulation skills, relapse prevention therapy.

Stage 4: Aftercare planning

Individual post-discharge treatment plan, continuation of outpatient therapy, psychiatric support, long-term safety strategy.

Treatment of lorazepam dependency involves significant psychiatric and neurological risk. In cases of seizures, psychosis or lack of response to pharmacological treatment, the patient may be referred to hospital treatment at a higher level of care.
