What is temazepam
Temazepam is a benzodiazepine with hypnotic, sedative and anxiolytic properties. It was widely used in the treatment of short-term insomnia, particularly in patients with difficulties maintaining sleep. Due to its mechanism of action on GABA-A receptors, temazepam carries a significant risk of developing tolerance and dependency, especially when used for longer than a few weeks.
Although temazepam is sometimes perceived as a "milder" sleeping benzodiazepine, many patients do not identify their reliance on it as addiction — treating it solely as "sleep assistance". This misperception can delay seeking appropriate treatment.
When urgent medical attention is required
Urgent medical attention is required if any of the following occur during withdrawal: seizures, loss of consciousness, severe disorientation, symptoms of psychosis, aggressive behaviour disproportionate to the situation, severe chest pain, shortness of breath or suspected overdose. In these situations, no attempt should be made to manage the condition independently. Patient safety and rapid clinical assessment are always the priority. In any life-threatening or health-threatening situation, emergency services should be contacted immediately by calling 112.
Temazepam and the risk of dependency
Despite being perceived as a "milder" hypnotic benzodiazepine, temazepam can lead to physical dependency, psychological addiction and intense rebound insomnia upon withdrawal. The risk increases when the medication is taken daily, doses are gradually increased, temazepam is used to manage anxiety or tension, or co-occurring psychiatric disorders are present.
How temazepam addiction develops
The addiction process typically unfolds in stages: use of the medication to treat insomnia, gradual shortening of its effective duration, need to increase the dose, inability to fall asleep without the medication, emergence of withdrawal symptoms and entrenchment of both psychological and physical dependency. Many patients do not identify the problem as addiction, viewing the medication purely as "help with sleep".
Symptoms of temazepam addiction
Psychological symptoms
- intensified anxiety when attempting dose reduction
- rebound insomnia
- irritability and low mood
- reduced concentration
- denial of the problem
Physical symptoms
- daytime drowsiness
- coordination difficulties
- psychomotor slowing
- headaches
- neurological symptoms
Temazepam withdrawal syndrome
Abrupt cessation of temazepam can lead to severe insomnia, anxiety and agitation, somatic symptoms, perceptual disturbances and — in serious cases — seizures. For this reason, detoxification must be carried out exclusively under medical supervision.

Stages of temazepam addiction treatment
Temazepam addiction treatment at Zeus Detox & Rehab typically proceeds through four main clinical stages:
Stage 1: Clinical assessment and qualification
Medical history, dose analysis, sleep assessment, laboratory tests, diagnosis of co-occurring psychiatric conditions.
Stage 2: Medically supervised detoxification
Gradual and controlled benzodiazepine withdrawal, neurological monitoring, seizure prevention, round-the-clock nursing care. This is the most critical stage of treatment.
Stage 3: Psychiatric treatment and psychotherapy
Following stabilisation: treatment of sleep and anxiety disorders, individual psychotherapy, addressing psychological dependency, relapse prevention therapy.
Stage 4: Aftercare planning
Development of a sleep stabilisation plan without benzodiazepines, continuation of outpatient or inpatient therapy, long-term safety strategy.
Treatment of temazepam dependency involves neurological risk and requires individual medical qualification. In cases of severe withdrawal symptoms or lack of response to treatment, the patient may be referred to hospital treatment at a higher level of care.
