What are psychiatric disorders
Psychiatric disorders are clinically recognisable conditions that affect emotional, cognitive, behavioural and social functioning. They are not a manifestation of character weakness or a transient crisis - they require professional assessment and appropriately tailored treatment. Symptoms may relate to mood, anxiety, thinking, sleep, behaviour, interpersonal relationships or the capacity for everyday functioning. Untreated psychiatric disorders tend to become entrenched, recur and deepen co-occurring health problems.
When urgent medical attention is required
Urgent medical attention is required if a psychological crisis arises involving suicidal ideation, intent to self-harm, loss of contact with reality, symptoms of acute psychosis, severe disorientation, rapid escalation of anxiety or agitation, aggressive behaviour disproportionate to the situation, or a state in which the patient is unable to ensure their own safety. In any life-threatening or health-threatening situation, emergency services should be contacted immediately by calling 112 or 999.
Why inpatient treatment may be necessary
In many cases outpatient treatment is sufficient. However, there are situations in which inpatient treatment represents the safest and most appropriate form of help. Inpatient treatment may be indicated when symptoms are severe or chronically persistent, when there is a significant deterioration in functioning, when outpatient treatment yields no improvement, when other psychiatric disorders or addictions co-occur, when intensive diagnostics and observation are necessary, or when continuous psychiatric supervision is required.

Stages of mental health treatment
Stage 1: Diagnosis and stabilisation
Psychiatric assessment, reduction of symptom severity and ensuring psychological safety.
Stage 2: Therapeutic treatment
In-depth psychotherapeutic work targeting the mechanisms of the disorder, emotional regulation and improvement of functioning.
Stage 3: Aftercare planning
Preparation of individual recommendations for continuation of treatment, outpatient therapy and relapse prevention.
Inpatient treatment focuses on medical stabilisation, mental health assessment and intensive therapeutic work in the acute or advanced phase of the disorder. It does not replace long-term outpatient treatment and does not guarantee specific clinical outcomes. Aftercare planning forms an integral part of the therapeutic process.
When inpatient mental health treatment is indicated
Inpatient treatment may be appropriate for individuals with severe psychiatric symptoms, a chronic or recurrent course of disorder, no improvement in outpatient treatment, co-occurring multiple disorders, or those requiring clinical structure and supervision. A different level of care is required for acute life-threatening states necessitating closed hospitalisation, for those who need only a single consultation, or where there is no readiness for inpatient treatment. Every case is individually qualified.
