What is oxazepam
Oxazepam is a benzodiazepine with anxiolytic, sedative and mild hypnotic properties. It is used in the treatment of anxiety disorders, psychological tension, alcohol withdrawal symptoms and anxiety-related insomnia.
Due to its relatively slower onset of action and the absence of active metabolites, oxazepam is sometimes considered "safer" — particularly in elderly patients. However, this does not eliminate the risk of developing tolerance, dependence and addiction with prolonged use.
When urgent medical attention is required
Urgent medical attention is required if any of the following occur during withdrawal: seizures, loss of consciousness, severe disorientation, symptoms of psychosis, aggressive behaviour disproportionate to the situation, severe chest pain, shortness of breath or suspected overdose. In these situations, no attempt should be made to manage the condition independently. Patient safety and rapid clinical assessment are always the priority. In any life-threatening or health-threatening situation, emergency services should be contacted immediately by calling 112.
Oxazepam and the risk of dependency
Dependency on oxazepam can develop with long-term use, regular daily intake, use of the medication as a mechanism for managing emotions or anxiety, and in patients with pre-existing psychiatric disorders. Dependency often develops imperceptibly, as the medication is frequently taken in accordance with medical recommendations.
How oxazepam addiction develops
The addiction process typically follows a characteristic course: use of the medication to treat anxiety or tension, gradual weakening of its therapeutic effect, entrenchment of a need to take it, anxiety and discomfort when attempts to stop are made, emergence of withdrawal symptoms, and both psychological and physical dependency. In many patients, oxazepam becomes an "essential medication for daily functioning".
Symptoms of oxazepam addiction
Psychological symptoms
- intensified anxiety when a dose is missed
- irritability and inner restlessness
- reduced concentration
- emotional difficulties without the medication
- denial of the problem
Physical symptoms
- daytime drowsiness
- dizziness
- coordination difficulties
- generalised weakness
- neurological symptoms
Oxazepam withdrawal syndrome
Abrupt cessation of oxazepam can lead to severe anxiety, insomnia, tremors, psychomotor agitation, somatic symptoms and — in serious cases — seizures. For this reason, detoxification must be carried out exclusively under medical supervision, with gradual dose reduction and round-the-clock monitoring.

Stage 1: Clinical assessment and qualification
Medical history, dose analysis, assessment of anxiety disorders, laboratory tests, diagnosis of co-occurring psychiatric conditions.
Stage 2: Medically supervised detoxification
Gradual and controlled benzodiazepine withdrawal, neurological monitoring, seizure prevention, round-the-clock nursing care. This is the most critical stage of treatment.
Stage 3: Psychiatric treatment and psychotherapy
Following stabilisation: treatment of anxiety disorders, individual psychotherapy, addressing psychological dependency, relapse prevention therapy.
Stage 4: Aftercare planning
Development of a strategy for functioning without benzodiazepines, continuation of outpatient or inpatient therapy, psychiatric support, long-term safety strategy.
Treatment of oxazepam dependency involves neurological and psychiatric risk and requires individual medical qualification. In cases of severe withdrawal symptoms or lack of response to treatment, the patient may be referred to hospital treatment at a higher level of care.
