What is zopiclone
Zopiclone is a sleeping medication from the class known as Z-drugs, used in the short-term treatment of insomnia. It acts by influencing GABA-A receptors in the central nervous system, producing sedation, reducing sleep onset time and prolonging sleep duration.
Although zopiclone is not structurally a benzodiazepine, its pharmacological action involves the same neurochemical mechanisms responsible for sleep and the inhibition of arousal. For this reason, zopiclone is not intended for long-term use.
When urgent medical attention is required
Urgent medical attention is required if any of the following occur during withdrawal: seizures, loss of consciousness, severe disorientation, symptoms of psychosis, aggressive behaviour disproportionate to the situation, severe chest pain, shortness of breath or suspected overdose. In these situations, no attempt should be made to manage the condition independently. Patient safety and rapid clinical assessment are always the priority. In any life-threatening or health-threatening situation, emergency services should be contacted immediately by calling 112.
Why zopiclone can lead to dependency
Zopiclone dependency can develop even when the medication is used correctly, particularly when the medication is taken for longer than a few weeks, the dose is increased without medical consultation, or chronic insomnia or anxiety disorders are present. Over time, tolerance develops and the sleep-inducing effect weakens. Alongside this, psychological dependence may emerge — the conviction that sleep without the medication is impossible.
How zopiclone addiction develops
The most common pattern of dependency development includes: effective treatment of insomnia in the initial period, gradual shortening of the medication's duration of action, increasing of the dose or frequency of use, intensified anxiety and insomnia upon attempts to stop, and finally compulsive use of the medication despite negative consequences. In many patients the problem develops gradually and remains unrecognised for a long time.
Symptoms of zopiclone addiction
Psychological symptoms
- anxiety about not having the medication
- intensified insomnia after a missed dose
- irritability and mood swings
- difficulties with concentration
- psychological attachment to the medication
Physical symptoms
- headaches and dizziness
- sensation of disorientation
- daytime fatigue
- withdrawal symptoms after stopping use
Risks of long-term zopiclone use
Chronic use of zopiclone can lead to deterioration of sleep quality despite continued use, impairment of memory and cognitive function, depressive and anxiety symptoms, episodes of amnesia and disorientation, and increased risk of falls and injuries. When combined with alcohol or other sedatives, the risk of complications increases significantly.
When inpatient treatment is required
Inpatient treatment may be indicated when attempts at independent cessation result in intensified symptoms, there has been prolonged daily use, psychological or neurological symptoms are present, outpatient treatment has been ineffective, or other addictions or psychiatric disorders are co-occurring. Every case requires individual clinical assessment.
Zopiclone addiction treatment at Zeus Detox & Rehab
Treatment of zopiclone addiction does not consist of replacing one medication with another, but of the gradual stabilisation of the patient's psychological state and the restoration of physiological sleep mechanisms. A full description of treatment methods, detoxification and therapy can be found on the page: Treating addiction to sleeping drugs (Z-drugs).
Abrupt cessation of zopiclone can be associated with significant medical risk. In cases of severe symptoms or risk to health, the patient may be referred to hospital treatment at a higher level of care. The information on this page is educational in nature and does not replace medical consultation.
