What is nitrazepam

Nitrazepam is a long-acting benzodiazepine with hypnotic, sedative, anxiolytic and anticonvulsant properties. It was widely used in the treatment of insomnia, particularly in older prescribing protocols. Its use is now increasingly restricted due to its high dependency potential and the risks associated with long-term use.

Many patients do not realise that nitrazepam belongs to the benzodiazepine class — a factor that can delay recognition of dependency and make withdrawal more complex.

When urgent medical attention is required

Urgent medical attention is required if any of the following occur during withdrawal: seizures, loss of consciousness, severe disorientation, symptoms of psychosis, aggressive behaviour disproportionate to the situation, severe chest pain, shortness of breath or suspected overdose. In these situations, no attempt should be made to manage the condition independently. Patient safety and rapid clinical assessment are always the priority. In any life-threatening or health-threatening situation, emergency services should be contacted immediately by calling 112.

Nitrazepam and the risk of dependency

Although often perceived as a "sleeping tablet", nitrazepam belongs to the benzodiazepine group and can lead to tolerance, physical dependency and psychological addiction. The risk increases when the medication is used for more than a few weeks, doses are increased without medical supervision, nitrazepam is taken daily, or it serves as a mechanism for managing anxiety or emotional tension.

How nitrazepam addiction develops

The addiction process typically progresses gradually: initial use for the treatment of insomnia, weakening of the medication's effectiveness, dose or frequency increases, difficulty sleeping without the medication, emergence of withdrawal symptoms, and entrenchment of both psychological and physical dependency. In many patients, dependency develops without any awareness that the medication they are taking belongs to the benzodiazepine class.

Symptoms of nitrazepam addiction

Psychological symptoms

  • intensified anxiety when attempting to stop
  • rebound insomnia
  • irritability and low mood
  • concentration difficulties
  • denial of the problem

Physical symptoms

  • daytime drowsiness and psychomotor slowing
  • coordination difficulties
  • tremors
  • neurological symptoms
  • withdrawal syndrome symptoms

Nitrazepam withdrawal syndrome

Abrupt cessation of nitrazepam can lead to severe insomnia, anxiety and agitation, somatic symptoms, disturbances of consciousness and — in serious cases — seizures. For this reason, withdrawal from nitrazepam requires medical supervision and should never be attempted independently.

Nitrazepam addiction treatment at Zeus Detox & Rehab

Treatment of benzodiazepine dependency is provided exclusively in an inpatient setting, under continuous physician and nursing team supervision. The process begins with a detailed clinical assessment encompassing the patient's history of medication use, psychological functioning and identification of the risk of withdrawal complications.

Care is delivered in a discreet clinical environment with full respect for the patient's privacy and dignity. The treatment plan is individualised and adjusted in accordance with the patient's clinical response.

Stages of nitrazepam addiction treatment

Nitrazepam addiction treatment at Zeus Detox & Rehab typically proceeds through four main clinical stages:

Stage 1: Clinical assessment and qualification

Medical history, dose analysis, assessment of insomnia and anxiety disorders, laboratory tests, diagnosis of co-occurring psychiatric conditions.

Stage 2: Medically supervised detoxification

Gradual and controlled benzodiazepine withdrawal, neurological monitoring, seizure prevention and sleep stabilisation, round-the-clock nursing care. This is the most critical stage of treatment.

Stage 3: Psychiatric treatment and psychotherapy

Following stabilisation: treatment of sleep and anxiety disorders, individual psychotherapy, addressing psychological dependency, relapse prevention therapy.

Stage 4: Aftercare planning

Individual post-discharge treatment plan, continuation of outpatient or inpatient therapy, sleep stabilisation without benzodiazepine pharmacotherapy, long-term safety strategy.

Treatment of nitrazepam dependency involves neurological and psychiatric risk and requires individual medical qualification. In cases of severe withdrawal symptoms, seizures or lack of response to pharmacological treatment, the patient may be referred to hospital treatment at a higher level of care.
