Anorexia Nervosa Treatment

Anorexia Nervosa Treatment
Anorexia treatment at Zeus Detox & Rehab is provided within a medically supervised inpatient model for patients requiring somatic stabilisation, psychiatric care and structured therapeutic treatment. The aim of treatment is to restore medical safety and to address the psychological mechanisms maintaining restrictive eating behaviours.
As part of our eating disorder treatment programme, we offer an individualised inpatient pathway for patients with anorexia nervosa. Zeus Detox & Rehab is located near Warsaw, Poland, and welcomes international patients.
Anorexia nervosa - clinical overview
Anorexia nervosa is a serious eating disorder characterised by persistent restriction of food intake, intense fear of weight gain and a distorted body image. It is a psychiatric illness with real and often severe somatic consequences - not a lifestyle choice or a matter of willpower. Anorexia is associated with one of the highest mortality rates among psychiatric disorders, arising from both medical complications and an elevated suicide risk. Early, comprehensive and medically supervised treatment is of critical importance.
When urgent medical attention is required
Urgent medical attention is required if a psychological crisis arises involving suicidal ideation, intent to self-harm, loss of contact with reality, symptoms of acute psychosis, severe disorientation, rapid escalation of anxiety or agitation, aggressive behaviour disproportionate to the situation, or a state in which the patient is unable to ensure their own safety. In any life-threatening or health-threatening situation, emergency services should be contacted immediately by calling 112 or 999.
Medical and psychological risks of untreated anorexia
Untreated anorexia can lead to serious complications including severe malnutrition and electrolyte disturbances, cardiac arrhythmias, hypotension and circulatory failure, hormonal disorders and infertility, osteoporosis and muscle atrophy, cognitive impairment and emotional blunting, and an increased risk of self-harm and suicidal ideation. Deterioration in health can also occur in individuals who appear to be functioning well professionally or socially.
Anorexia treatment at Zeus Detox & Rehab
Anorexia treatment is delivered in a confidential inpatient model, with an emphasis on medical safety and somatic stabilisation, psychiatric responsibility, individual treatment planning and structured, non-stigmatising therapeutic care. An interdisciplinary team of physicians, psychiatrists, psychologists and psychotherapists experienced in complex eating disorder treatment provides ongoing care.
Comprehensive clinical assessment
The treatment process begins with detailed diagnostics which may include a medical examination and laboratory investigations, psychiatric consultation, assessment of nutritional and metabolic status, assessment of eating disorder severity and diagnosis of co-occurring disorders. On this basis, an individual, flexible treatment plan is created.
Integrated anorexia treatment model
Treatment addresses physical restoration and psychological mechanisms simultaneously and may include medically supervised nutritional stabilisation, monitoring of vital signs and metabolic parameters, individual psychotherapy, psychiatric care where indicated, psychoeducation and behavioural interventions, work on emotional regulation and body image, and supportive therapies where clinically justified. The aim is lasting recovery, not short-term symptom control.
Stages of anorexia treatment
Stage 1: Medical stabilisation
Restoration of physical safety, metabolic balance and bodily stability under continuous medical supervision.
Stage 2: Targeted therapy
Work on fear of weight gain, distorted body image, perfectionism, trauma and emotional regulation.
Stage 3: Continuation of care
Planning of further treatment, relapse prevention and coordination of outpatient or specialist aftercare post-discharge.
Confidentiality and safety of treatment
Treatment takes place in a controlled inpatient environment designed with privacy, psychological safety and focus on the recovery process in mind. All care is delivered with strict confidentiality and respect for the patient's dignity.
When inpatient anorexia treatment is indicated
Inpatient treatment may be appropriate for individuals with metabolic or nutritional instability, significant weight loss or entrenched restrictive eating patterns, distorted body image and limited illness insight, co-occurring depression, anxiety, trauma or OCD features, ineffectiveness of outpatient or day programme treatment, or a high risk of relapse and difficulties with self-regulation.
A different level of care is indicated for acute conditions requiring admission to an internal medicine ward or ICU, for individuals seeking only outpatient nutritional guidance or short-term support without therapy, and in situations where outpatient or community treatment is indicated. Every case is individually qualified on the basis of clinical assessment.
